This week the college hosted Advisory Committee meetings on the Coffee Campus for Ben Hill-Irwin and Coffee Campuses. The following day the Valdosta Campus hosted its Advisory Committees. Wiregrass appreciates all our business and industry partners on our committees. People ask me all the time, what is #impactinvesting? There's no better way to answer that question than to share an example. Here's one of my favorites--the story of what's old is new again, a restored, reimagined thriving market in Baltimore creating jobs and access to healthy food for the underserved community. Check out "Our Story -Lexington Market" Lexington Market and thanks Mission Investors Exchange for the tour!

Restaurants are powerful community builders A story from 9/11/01 For New Yorkers, the impact of the horrific events of that blue-sky Tuesday impacted us in ways we could not have predicted. From environmental and economic considerations to the lingering psychological impact, we were changed. Twenty-two years later, I still get uneasy when I see a commercial jetliner flying over Manhattan. I am proud to have worked for a company that prioritized humanity. On the morning of the attacks, the team at Union Square Cafe (USC) decided to open the restaurant as a gathering place for people who needed comfort. The staff served sandwiches, pastries, and beverages to anyone who wanted them, free of charge. It was a decision they made as a group. Over the course of that day, people walked in a daze uptown from the financial district. Hundreds stopped at USC. There were reunions and stories shared between strangers. The next few months were brutal for New York, the country, and our industry. Danny Meyer brought together the entire NYC restaurant community to help start the long healing process and save our industry from the recession that started that morning. It took quick thinking, tenacity, and dedication to the community to make it work. At the heart of everything was a belief that we are better together. If you’d like to hear Danny share his story, listen to Our City Our Story, from the , linked in the comments.Over the course of this week, I will explore other stories of community building. Make it a great week. #community #business #hospitality #hospitalityindustry #leadership #management #restaurants #restaurantbusiness #neverforget Maynard Consulting

🍷🏢 The Implications of New York's Wine Bill on Small Businesses and Community Culture 🏢🍷Recent legislation introduced in New York, aiming to permit wine sales in grocery stores, has ignited a critical debate concerning the future of small businesses and the cultural fabric of communities across the state. This proposal, while enhancing consumer convenience, poses significant challenges for small, often family-owned liquor stores, which have been community staples for generations.Leaders like Michael Correra, representing the Metropolitan Package Store Association, are at the forefront of this discussion, advocating for the preservation of businesses that contribute significantly to the local economy and community identity. These stores are more than retail outlets; they are cultural cornerstones that foster personal connections and contribute to the unique atmosphere of their neighborhoods. This legislative move prompts a broader conversation about the balance between progress and the preservation of community values. As professionals, it's crucial to consider the impact of such changes on small businesses, local economies, and the social fabric of our communities.Explore the debate and its potential implications for New York's small businesses and community culture: https://lnkd.in/g7zHTAGE#NYWineBill #SmallBusinessAdvocacy #CommunityCulture

Inspiring story about Surrey Hills Grocer CEO, Ms Gek Teng Pang. What stood out for me is the message that academic excellence does not always equate to success in life. Rather the courage to face the prospect of failure and the resilience to bounce back after failure matters. Of course, clever strategies and access to opportunities are important. However, this story underscores the old adage that “Failure is the Mother of Success.” This saying seems cliche and hackneyed, but it is an important lesson that I’ve been trying to impart to my 6-year-old. It’s essential for our kids to experience some level of failure, especially in the early part of their lives when they have their parents around them as a safety net. It’s not our responsibility to shield them from these obstacles but to help them develop the skills to tackle and cope with these obstacles. #parenting #failureisthemotherofsuccess Surrey Hills Grocer CEO: ‘Doing something new is always scary but meaningful’

Thanks Jeff Seifried for the excellent tour of Mother's Brewing Company! We really appreciated your time and willingness to answer our many, many questions. Especially since you were also hosting the MISSOURI CRAFT BREWERS GUILD conference! A couple of my students confessed that knowing we would be visiting Mother's was the big reason they signed up for the #ManagementInAction class. And they were not disappointed! This makes me sad.......I've been doing this long enough to know that I never have a complete perspective. It's impossible to know everything here, and I fully admit that. I know current and former employees and leaders for Foxtrot, and have been a customer myself as well. Building and scaling a business is hard. Raising money to support that vision is hard. Balancing competing interests and pressures is hard. But front-line employees learning they don't have a job by showing up to work to find locks on the door and an IG post with comments disabled is WRONG. There is so much damage done here, the least of which is the capital lost. I'm disappointed that hard-working hourly workers took a train and a couple buses to work today to find out their corporate leadership didn't have enough courage to tell them before they bought their tickets...As an industry, we MUST do better than this. Ten percent of America works here, and we cannot pretend to wonder why they are giving us the side-eye.#hospitality #goodjobs #beyondthestraw
