What is the difference between SDS and MSDS? ›

MSDS was the original system for providing information about the properties of chemical products. Whereas SDS is the updated system that conforms to GHS standards. In comparison to SDS, MSDS was less standardized and not globally recognized.

The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) requires chemical manufacturers, distributors, or importers to provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDSs) to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products.

Employers, as well as chemical manufacturers, distributors and importers, must have replaced their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) with new Safety Data Sheets (SDS) as of June 1, 2015.

The SDS includes information such as the properties of each chemical; the physical, health, and environmental health hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical.

OSHA requires that employers maintain copies of SDSs for each chemical in the workplace classified as hazardous. Although some hazardous chemicals, such as household cleaning products, do not require the employer to maintain an SDS if used for the same purpose, duration, and frequency as a consumer.

Exempt items generally include food or alcoholic beverages which are sold, used, or prepared in a retail establishment (such as a grocery store, restaurant, or drinking place), and foods intended for personal consumption by employees while in the workplace.

Labs may utilize electronic SDSs as long as no barriers to employee access are created. Printed copies of SDSs must be available to employees who do not have computer access. EH&S recommends that labs retain printed SDSs for highly hazardous materials and materials used on a daily or weekly basis.

It has been shown to irritate the skin of the face, with prolonged and constant exposure (more than an hour) in young adults. SDS may worsen skin problems in individuals with chronic skin hypersensitivity, with some people being affected more than others.

Is it bad to inhale SDS? ›

Inhalation: Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause severe allergic respiratory reaction. May cause severe irritation of the respiratory tract with sore throat, coughing, shortness of breath and delayed lung edema. Chronic: Repeated exposure may cause allergic respiratory reaction (asthma).

SDS is an anionic detergent that gives net negative charge to the proteins. So as Pant said, it has no effect with negatively charged DNA. It simply disrupts membrane proteins and lipids, break the nuclear pores and make it expose its DNA inside thereby separating it from histones. Hope this helps.

So, yes, safety data sheets do expire. The expiration depends on the discovery of new and significant information. OSHA doesn't clearly define what they mean by “new and significant.” It's assumed that it includes any changes in classification, new hazards, new risk management, and/or new exposure limits.

Employers may discard a material safety data sheet for a mixture, if the new data sheet includes the same hazardous chemicals as the original formulation. If the formulation is different then the employer must maintain both data sheets for at least 30 years.
